Why We Give

It is the mission of the University of Minnesota Women’s Club to financially assist University of Minnesota students needing help to achieve their educational goals, and it is anticipated that all UMWC members will support the club’s mission. We believe that educated students make good, contributing citizens of the world.

Our support for students has been ongoing since 1914, shortly after the organization was founded.  To date, the UMWC has awarded more than one million dollars in scholarships to University of Minnesota students in need of financial help. In recent years, the Scholarship Fund has provided more than 50 scholarships per year.

Our scholarships have become more essential as tuitions have increased. Gradually, over time, the percentage of state tuition support has eroded, until today it is closer to 30 percent rather than 70 percent as it was decades ago. This makes scholarships more and more important.

Subject: Our Gift to the Future

“What an extraordinary story of impact and inspiration—whether from the student or benefactor perspective!” Michelle Lian-Anderson, Chief Development Officer, University-wide Scholarships, University of Minnesota Foundation.

The UMWC Scholarship Program has impacted the lives of UMN students since 1914, often doing so quietly. But, a recent article appearing on the University of Minnesota Foundation website and then picked up Brief, the official University of Minnesota faculty and staff weekly news digest, highlighted this inspiring story. But, how does a story like this get told? As always, “it takes a village.”

UMWC member and recent U of M retiree, Lynn Slifer, pitched the idea to former colleague, Kim Kiser, senior writer/editor at the U of M Foundation (UMF). Kim reached out to Michelle Lian-Anderson. And with input from Susan Hopp, Nancy Kluver, Diane Young and Georgia Nygaard the story content evolved. So, it took a village!

And in case you missed the story “Our Gift to the Future,” on the UMF website or in Brief, we would like to share it with you. Enjoy!
